Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find the answers to frequently asked questions. If your question isn’t on the list, don’t hesitate to contact us!

For whom are the mouth masks suitable?

We make 3-layer surgical masks type IIR. These masks are used in regular hospital care, home care, elderly care, and dentistry. Our masks are not FFP2 and FFP3 masks.

How do I know that the mouth masks are approved?

Mouth masks must be certified. We work with an external organization that certifies oral masks and tests them in the laboratory using a cultured bacterial culture. The comfort of the masks is checked as well. If everything is perfect, they get a green light. Mondmaskerfabriek is on the list to be tested (and therefore probably) certified.

Who can buy the mouth masks?

The mouth masks are only suitable for consumer sales in a very small edition. The lion’s share goes to healthcare. You can always make a request via our website.

When is the first delivery of masks expected?

That depends on the certification, but our machines are already working to make the first line.

How many masks do you make exactly?

At our peak capacity, we expect to be able to produce 100,000 face masks per day. That may increase when we have extra machines and raw materials at our disposal.

Who works on the masks in the factory?

The Mouth Mask Factory is an initiative of, among others, Refugee Company. Refugee Company offers status holders the opportunity to gain work experience and thus acclimate in the Netherlands. Status holders were, therefore, very welcome to apply for the factory positions, but others could also apply. The 28 positions are currently filled, but who knows, we may be looking to expand in the future. Work experience is not necessary, but motivation and enthusiasm are appreciated!

Will the shareholders get rich from this initiative?

No, the Mondmaskerfabriek was set up with the idea of keeping status holders at work, providing work experience and at the same time producing the much-needed mouth masks locally. We put 70% of the profit back into the company so we can help more people to work, protect more healthcare professionals, and at the same time, keep the production chain entirely local.

Who owns the Mondmaskerfabriek?

In March 2020, entrepreneurs Jaap Stelwagen, Fleur Bakker, Johan Blom and Naz Kawan set up the Mondmaskerfabriek from the network of the Refugee Company. Two weeks later, Merthus Bezemer also joined as a shareholder. We couldn’t do it alone, we got a lot of support from companies like KLM, the Philips Foundation, Philips, Friends for Brands, Qredits and Qing.

Can you volunteer at the Mask Factory?

We do not need volunteers at this time. Volunteers have been called in, such as Debora Timmerman, designer of change processes and expert in communication at Groener Gras. But also Menno Blom, former COO Aviko, who helps us to establish the production chain and organize the certification. And Olaf van den Brink, former director of logistics at, who helps us set up our logistics and distribution.

Who works in the Mask Factory?

The mission of the Mondmaskerfabriek is to help people with a refugee background find work. From the end of May, 28 employees will be working in the factory, many of whom have a refugee background. Of these, 23 people with a status reside in Arnhem and 3 status holders from surrounding municipalities and 2 employees have a Dutch background. The Refugee Company Foundation, which provides the supporting re-start program, also has 3 coaches on the payroll, 2 of which are status holders and have been in the Netherlands for some time.

How are the employees paid?

Our employees have a paid job with a 7-month contract and are rewarded in accordance with CAO Mitt. Employees build up a pension. Most employees make a shift of 6 hours for 4 days and are paid an extra 4 hours, during which they can follow additional training, receive personal guidance, or take a Dutch language boost class. In addition, we offer extra opportunities, such as acquiring a forklift certification.
